The Bitter Homeland
The “Bitter Homeland” project is an example of this exploration. Centred around a bed—a symbol of relationships and lovemaking—this arrangement transforms an intimate space into a place for reflecting on geopolitical sketches.
A quilt and two pillows, each featuring a geographical map, symbolize the separation of two imaginary lovers from different countries.
The quilt, inspired by traditional Iranian quilting, depicts the map of Canada engraved with the slogan "Bitter Homeland," referencing a Greek protest poem. For the proposed video, I will use the sound of a Greek opera singer and a Greek musician. The surrounding images of birds, migration, war, lips, and kisses speak to the enduring themes of life and love that transcend borders. I will expand these elements with pottery and other materials around the installation.
The pillows, depicting the maps of Iran and Greece, symbolize separation while also embodying symbols of peace and connection. Through the visual narration of my stories, I convey the bitter memories of my homeland with a poetic approach, creating emotional and cultural empathy between countries in other geographies through my geopolitical sketches.
