Afsaneh Akhoondi is an Iranian-Canadian visual artist based in Toronto, known for her evocative explorations of identity, memory, and cultural continuity. Her multidisciplinary practice encompasses painting, drawing, printmaking, and installation, often integrating Plexiglas and mixed media to create layered, thought-provoking works.Drawing inspiration from her lived experiences, Afsaneh’s art is deeply rooted in the profound social and political changes she witnessed in Iran, including the revolution, war, sanctions, and women’s protests for fundamental freedoms. These events have profoundly shaped her artistic vision and continue to inform her creative process.Since immigrating to Canada, Afsaneh’s projects have explored the intersections of identity, gender, and the evolving relationship between her homeland and her new environment. She has presented eight solo exhibitions and participated in more than 40 national and international group shows, including a UNESCO residency in Paris in 2016 and curating a group exhibition.Beyond her studio practice, Afsaneh is a dedicated arts educator and professional. She has worked as a faculty member and art instructor, coordinating and organizing art events, writing art reviews, curating undergraduate student exhibitions, and managing student portfolios. Her dedication to nurturing artistic development also includes her participation in international symposiums and workshops.Afsaneh holds a Bachelor’s degree in Painting and a Master of Fine Arts from Azad Art University in Tehran, as well as a certificate in Arts Management from Centennial College, Toronto
